I own several theology sites beside this one, and really this site’s purpose is simply to be the landing page to find the podcast and house the show notes. It isn’t meant for discussion, and I don’t have the time to respond to in-depth comments here. There is a place on the TheologyWeb discussion forum where the podcast episodes can be discussed. The area for such discussions is located here: TheologyWeb. You must register with the forum to discuss. As such, I have disabled comments here.

Alternatively, you can email me at preteristpodcast@gmail.com or call my voicemail at 561-318-3066. I cannot usually answer emails personally, but generally will use the comments and questions on the show so that the most people can benefit. As I mentioned in the previous episode, Chris Date had been working on an episode of his podcasts looking at how the phrase “this generation” and the Greek word genea are used in Scripture. He has since published that episode, but for those of you who haven’t yet tuned in to his show, he wrapped the content of that episode in the Preterist Podcast theme and I’m including in this feed for your listening pleasure. Just forgive him his poor choice in operating systems and music players. And if you noticed an odd hiccup in the transition between the intro theme and the main content, I had to do a hack and slash on Garage Band (in a good operating system) since apparently Chris’ Windows workflow doesn’t know from level controls, and I had pity on the eardrums of you, dear listeners, for no matter how awesome the theme music is, nothing is good that LOUD.

An interesting aside…

If you are a word geek, you will enjoy the podcast, A Way With Words. In the introductory comments to this episode, you may remember that I said “the implications are enormous.” I used that descriptive with care. On a recent episode of a Way With Words (link), the hosts discussed the semantic cultural shift that is occurring with the use of the word enormous/enormity. Here is the dictionary.com definition:

–adjective
1. greatly exceeding the common size, extent, etc.; huge; immense: an enormous fortune.
2. outrageous or atrocious: enormous wickedness; enormous crimes.

I never really considered the second option, but it turns out that this qualitative rather than quantitative meaning has purists in stitches over President Obama apparently using the word the word “enormity” solely in the first capacity, or so it is claimed. I know now that I have another awesome nuance to play with.

Nevertheless, the translation of genea is “generation” or as Thayer explains it, giving Matthew 24:34 and Mark 13:30 as examples, “the whole multitude of men living at the time . . . used especially of the Jewish race living at one and the same period” (Joseph Henry Thayer, A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan Publishing House, 1979, p. 112). G. Abbott-Smith writes that the Greek word genea means “race, stock, family,” but in the New Testament always “generation” (G. Abbott-Smith, Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament, 2nd ed., Edinburgh: T.&T. Clarke, 1923, p. 89). Arndt and Gingrich note that the term means “literally, those descended from a common ancestor,” but “basically, the sum total of those born at the same time, expanded to include all those living at a given time, generation, contemporaries” (W.F. Arndt and F.W. Gingrich, A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1957, p. 153).

I am a guest on the Unbelievable Radio Program

Early today (6am!), I participated in a pre-recorded discussion/irenic debate on the Unbelievable Radio Program hosted by Justin Brierley which is aired on the Premiere Christian Network across the pond. The program will air Saturday October 31. Ohh spooooky. It will hit their iTunes feed that same day. Here is the link to their website and to their iTunes subscription page. The show is very good, so don’t wait to listen until my appearance airs, subscribe now.

The other guests are Terry Boyle and Andrew of South East London. Terry Boyle is a UK minister with Chuck Swindoll’s ministry Insight for Living. He is a dispensationalist who graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary. Andrew is a liberal Christian who is a regular listener to the Unbelievable Program, and it was an email from him that prompted the invitation for me to appear. One of his prime reasons for denying the inerrancy of Scripture is his belief that the New Testament contains failed prophecies. He is aware of the hyperpreterist position and orthodox preterist positions (and perhaps might even have held the hyperpreterist position for a short period of time), but he doesn’t find either of them tenable.

The recording is done, and I think it went very well. Like always, I did the mush-mouth tongue twist at the beginning due to nerves, but once I settled down I was fine. It was a very amicable discussion. I didn’t intend to do this, meaning I didn’t plan it, but at the very end I think I got in a really pointed question to Pastor Terry that he didn’t expect. He was very gracious in acknowledging that he will take it to heart. Andrew, the liberal Christian, was quite charming, and I was delighted to find that he is no slouch. Unlike most of my hyperpreterist critics, Andrew actually knew what my position was and was familiar with my work. Pastor Terry was asked on the show at the last minute and wouldn’t have time to have read my commentary or anything really substantive, but he was familiar with my position writ large.

There was so much I wanted to rebut! So I took notes, and Justin will be sending me the raw file so that I can do some further explanation on my podcast. That means I HAVE to get the Frost podcast done and over with finally.

As most of you realize, Dee Dee has not been regularly posting here at “Pret Blog” for some time. She has repeatedly expressed the need for prayer as she was dealing with some serious personal problems. As things have now progressed, Dee Dee has asked me to relate this personal information to her friends and request that you give special times of prayer to her current circumstances. As the Apostle Paul states: “… The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16)

I have been in consultation with Dee Dee for some time now as a pastor, mentor, and friend. As I have gotten to know Dee Dee, she has become a special Christian Lady who I am proud to call my friend. Early on in our relationship, Dee Dee asked me to counsel her about problems in her marriage as a Minister/Pastor and Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor. Every effort to get her husband into Christian counseling was given by Dee Dee, but we were met with rejection at every turn. Dee Dee was committed to making her marriage work, and as a Christian, felt that she needed to pursue that objective above all other duties and tasks currently in her life, which explains why she has not been actively blogging at this time.

In the end, a divorce is inevitable and the reasons why are not important information that needs to be known. What is most important to Dee Dee is letting her friends know that she has done everything asked of her to make the marriage work. She did so with a passion, but the problem is not with her. I assure you that under the authority of Scripture and with full confessional consideration the divorce is biblical for her and she is not at fault before God and the Church. There have been many tears, heartaches, and disappointments, not to mention stress and depression. We know that God’s grace is sufficient. I ask that you pray that God’s grace be granted to our sister-in-Christ. She needs, now more than ever, to be embraced by her Christian friends, assuring her that we are united with her and willing to give the love and support she needs to get through these trying times.

I ask that you pray for our sister, and send letters (e-mails) of encouragement. Please allow her to continue have the personal space she needs to continue healing emotionally and spiritually. I assure you that she will be back stronger than ever and more committed to the advancement of the truth of Christ’s Gospel.

Hi guys, right now I have a lot of offline things to deal with that I don’t have yet an ending point to state, though there will be one. So I will be scarce until then. I thought I could keep up, but between my job and life, right now I cannot. I still do have that podcast that was recorded two months ago that I will get out when I can find time to do some postproduction. I covet your prayers.

So no, it isn’t pod-fade. I have a lot of material ready to record, but to everything there is a time and a season. I have guest shows to pop in the feed as well. The postproduction on the recorded show is high up there on my list for whatever free time I find. I would like to say this weekend, but I have a lot of plans with friends, well okay, mostly just promises to call them and gab on the phone for hours, and I am going out to lunch with a dear friend that used to work at my office. She and I have had conflicting schedules so I don’t want to miss it.

I am going to take some time off. I may come and do a few things, but I need some time to just have no responsibilities except my job. It won’t last incredibly long, but I would expect to see me at all until next week. I don’t even have a computer set up at home right now.

I have a lot going on in life right now that some of you know about. I won’t say I won’t be here at all, but if I am, it will be sporadic. There is a podcast soon to be up since it was already nearly done.

So what’s up with a new episode chica?

Okay, tonight I was going to record another episode, and as I was finishing up my notes, I realized that the material was becoming too confusing to follow without a prior article outlining all of the finer details. So, I decided I must write the article first, and then just give highlights in the podcast, referring anyone who is really interested to the written piece. This serves two important purposes. One, clarity. Two, it will free my listeners who aren’t interested in the latest hyperpreterist shenanigans to get the Cliff’s Notes version and move on. Please be advised, however, that ever since my recent podcast in which I finally exposed to the light the wickedness of certain hyperpreterists towards me a few years back, I am determined not to keep silent again. When they lie or play dirty tricks, I am going to call them on it. Some, such as Sharon Nichols, may dismiss such as ad hominem. Well, sorry friends, but in Christianity, character matters. Orthodoxy should lead to orthopraxy. When we see such outright abusive and dishonest behaviour of people claiming to be Christians (nigh, even leaders), their orthodopraxy IS relevant to their doctrine. Notice, I said claiming to be Christians. I do not accept that claim, and I do not believe that it is a coincidence that so many people have had similar unorthopraxic experiences with this particular unorthodox (heretical) group.

So that is the way I will try to handle these kinds of issues when they come up. Give an outline in the podcast referring back to a more detailed article to those who are interested and want to research and read the allegations for themselves. Don’t ever just take my word for something. I have seen this mindless acceptance happen at Sovereign Grace Preterism whenever these serious issues were raised; and it was downright cultic.

So in short, I have been working on getting actually two shows up soon. Please be patient. I hope that I am consistent in my attempts to source my information and give thorough research trails. But that takes a great deal of time.

Like Episode 5, this podcast was unplanned, but recent events have caused me to finally expose the seedy underbelly of hyperpreterism and turn on the lights. This episode deals in somewhat explicit detail my experiences with the worst of the hyperpreterist movement for the past decade. It is also a long episode. If you are at all interested in the back-story of this type of work, it is a must-listen. If you are not particularly interested in my own personal story (and that is fine, believe me, I am not interested in the personal stories of a lot of podcasters I listen to), but really only the exegesis of the preterist passages, then you will want to skip this podcast. The humour-content of this episode is also very light due to the subject matter addressed.

Umm what’s up? Its been a month. I thought you preterists were timely.

I am currently working on the next two episodes. I had thought I would have finished one of them this weekend, but as I got into writing it, there was a lot more material than I had anticipated. I am about 75% through with the notes for the next one. The problem is being able to record. It is not due to a lack of time, but a lack of proper environment. My computer, my beautiful Mac Pro, is in the middle of everything. My house is pretty small, and unless I am home alone, there just isn’t any quiet place or time to record. So all of my recording is done when no one is home, and the parrots are in bed. That narrows the window of recording opportunity considerably. But never fear, it is coming. Or maybe, you had better fear, it is coming. I suppose it is all a matter of perspective.

Pt. 2 – Kicking some Left Behind

This is part two of a somewhat humourous critique that I will be doing on the audio version of Left Behind by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. This is the second part and still barely gets into the opening chapter of the first book. I explain further why I am doing this to begin with and why, although I am handling this is a joking manner, infantile reduction of Christianity in American Christianity is a major problem.

Issues Discussed

Immature depiction of the roles of men and women with juvenile suggestive names.

Being obsessed with the “End Times” and the “Rapture” – i.e. the Rapture is not the Gospel nor is it our calling to wait around to be snatched out of the world.

Christianity is about death and resurrection, not about Jesus coming back to get us before we die.

Using scare-tactic eschatology as a witnessing tool.

Nonsensical eisgesis.

Sensationalism.

IMPORTANT: I quoted another author’s critique in my introduction. It is possible that some listening may think I was claiming that LaHaye and Jenkins are not Christians or that the Gospel is not presented at all in the book. I absolutely have no reason to believe that LaHaye and Jenkins are not brothers in Lord, and yes, there are times when the very basic Gospel is presented, but the doctrines stressed in Left Behind are not the Gospel and can distract from any true Gospel messages.

Important Podcast News

I am taking about two weeks off as I am overloaded with some other projects, so I will not even be thinking of starting preparation for the next episode until then. So it will be three to four weeks until the next episode, unless I finish my other projects sooner. And it is likely that the next one will be Kicking Some Left Behind Part Two, but I haven’t decided yet. I have some notes written for that already, so I might do that while it is fresh in my head. Having fresh Left Behind in your head in not a pleasant experience.

Kicking some Left Behind – Part One

This is part of a somewhat humourous critique that I will be doing on the audio version of Left Behind by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. This is the first part and barely gets into the opening chapter of the first book. I introduce why I am doing this to begin with and why, although I am handling this is a joking manner, infantile reduction of Christianity in American Christianity is a major problem.

Issues Discussed

Only being able to talk about Christianity – i.e. being that embarassing weird guy at Church.

Being obsessed with the “End Times” and the “Rapture” – i.e. the Rapture is not the Gospel nor is it our calling to wait around to be snatched out of the world.

Christian cliches – i.e. “Christians aren’t perfect, they are just forgiven.” “Real Men Love Jesus”. “In case of rapture, this car will be unmanned.”

Using scare-tactic eschatology as a witnessing tool.

Representing that rapturism is the straight-forward teaching of the Bible without question.

Carnal exaltation of ethic Israel.

When the literalists find Russian bombers and modern nations in passages that speak of wooden weapons.

Newspaper exegesis.

The developer for PodPress does the work for free in his spare time and does wonderful work, so patience is a must. So far, PodPress has given a date of about July 27th for a fix. It is possible that my perpetual WordPress ninja hero cirisme may be able to revert the database back, but I don’t want to burden him – he helps me so much already. I had a question graciously posed to me about my pen-name that I plan on posting a short episode on so that everyone is educated on the topic and taking a look at my notes for the next installment on the Olivet Discourse, there is a real possibility I might be able to get those two things uploaded this weekend. That section of Scripture is not going to take as long as I thought or … I am missing part of my notes.

And maybe…. I have had a little fun just laughing at Left Behind, so maybe that too.

Unite and Conquer – despite my opposition to their particular eschatologies, any non-preterists who affirm orthodox eschatology are my brethren. Sometimes in our fallen state other things get in the way of showing this unity, but no matter our own failings, we are ineffably bound together in Christ. To attempt to partner with heretics to attack secondary doctrines of other brethren can obscure, but cannot sever, that bond. However it is disobedience. What fellowship hath darkness with light? If we are so zealous with our particular point of view that we would rather a brother or sister embrace heresy or abandon the faith because they have different eschatological positions than us, there is something out of whack. If you are a futurist, and anything I am saying is disturbing to you in a way that is causing doubt or heresy to arise in your heart – don’t listen. There is a time and season for everything. Now is not your season for this issue. I would rather all of Christendom become non-preterist than for one of the brethren to embrace hyperpreterism or abandon the faith altogether. Zeal can be a four-letter word.

First, to warn people to be wary of Gary DeMar and others who might blur the line between orthodoxy and heresy through passive complicity and to see the harm that such behaviour can cause. Secondarily, it would be to get Gary to change his ways on this subject, and if not, for those who support him to bring some pressure to bear until he does for the sake of the Church or at the very least to be completely cognizant that Gary has not been a champion of the historic faith in areas completely relevant to his ministry.

Hopefully Gary sees what hyperpreterists really think about him if he is a committed orthodox preterist.

Here is a banner ad currently appearing on a heretical preterist site. Has Gary asked for it to be removed? I doubt it, he participates there (at least as of last year or so) where people are led into heresy on a daily basis.

Here is another example that was just brought to my attention. When asked about favourite reading materials hyperpreterist Ed Burley gushes, “Anything By Gary DeMar is awesome!” I teach all the same prophetic material that Gary does but NO hyperpreterist will EVER say “Anything by Dee Dee Warren is awesome!” Thank God.

Are you concerned about this? Contact Gary at American Vision and urge him to disassociate himself from hyperpreterists and to defend the historical doctrine of the resurrection.

Hopefully Gary sees what hyperpreterists really think about him if he is a committed orthodox preterist.

Here is a banner ad currently appearing on a heretical preterist site. Has Gary asked for it to be removed? I doubt it, he participates there (at least as of last year or so) where people are led into heresy on a daily basis.

Here is another example that was just brought to my attention. When asked about favourite reading materials hyperpreterist Ed Burley gushes, “Anything By Gary DeMar is awesome!” I teach all the same prophetic material that Gary does but NO hyperpreterist will EVER say “Anything by Dee Dee Warren is awesome!” Thank God.

Are you concerned about this? Contact Gary at American Vision and urge him to disassociate himself from hyperpreterists and to defend the historical doctrine of the resurrection.

This is not a real episode. It’s a “get a grip” episode – preparing you, gentle listener, for what’s ahead. Episode 8 will be up as soon as possible. I am not going to tell you what it is about because, well, that’s how I roll. But I will tell you that Roderick Edwards is my co-host for that episode–the one I won’t tell you about. Unfortunately, I made a boo-boo in recording the Skype call. It was completely my fault; not the fault of my Mac. Nothing is ever the fault of my Mac. When I set my Skype settings, I properly split the conversation into two tracks, but like a Windoze dork, I didn’t set the record settings to record in AIFF format but rather the crappy AAC format which didn’t properly preserve the split. Fortunately Roderick sounds great, but I sound like a warmed over turd omelet thrown into a pit of hissing snakes. Yes, it’s that bad. So I have a LOT of post-production to do on my end. On the upside, it gives me the opportunity to play with some of my new production toys such as Peak LE5 and SoundSoap. Worst case scenario, I just re-record exactly what I said the first time and carve out Roderick’s side and splice them back together. If you are thinking that this sounds like it might be a good twelve hours of work, you would be right. Wish me luck.
